The Small and Mighty grants program was created in 2016 in response to barriers that smaller organizations faced in accessing support from foundations. Since then, the program has provided operating and program support funding to nonprofits meeting basic needs areas of food, transportation, employment, child care, housing, physical and mental healthcare, and education for communities across Allegheny County. As of 2022, the Foundation has awarded $2.2 million in grants to 84 unique organizations, of which 57% are BIPOC-led.
GRANT CYCLE: 2023
As the Foundation reflects on the impact of this work to date and considers options for strengthening our support for small nonprofits in future years, we have made the decision to not open Small and Mighty to new applicants this year. The 2023 grant cycle will only be open to Small and Mighty grantees that were awarded a grant in 2022. Please note that receiving a grant in 2022 does not guarantee funding this year.
Organizations that are eligible to apply for funding in 2023 will receive an invitation to apply via email from the Small and Mighty Team on or before June 1, 2023. If you do not receive an invitation by this date but believe that you are eligible to apply for funding this year, please reach out to your program officer.
The Foundation is committed to continuing to support small nonprofits and encourages organizations to learn more about our foundation-directed grantmaking and other grant opportunities.
